Course leader
David Wild, University of Coimbra, Portugal.
Description
The aim of the course is to improve the communicative abilities of students in English in contexts which connect their degree subjects to the law and to legal issues. The course will emphasise participation from an early stage, and will consist largely of simulated situations which students will research and then play out. Modes of discourse will be variously adversarial, inquisitorial, conversational and presentational. The discipline of articulating aspects of their own subjects, simply and competently so that students of other disciplines can understand and engage with it, should reinforce retention of new knowledge, both of English usage and otherwise. Students will need to spend a fair amount of time online preparing to participate in exercises. Students with competence in English at Council of Europe levels B2/C1 are likely to profit most from this course, but the course can accommodate the range of levels likely to be found among students at the summer school. Evaluation of the course will centre on performance in the simulation exercises, but other elements can be incorporated, depending on summer school policy.
